![]() Other experiments conducted by ISS researchers might also result in more accurate clocks, more useful weather predictions, and stronger metals. Research using these crystals might lead to more effective treatments for cancer, diabetes, and other conditions. Other operations take advantage of microgravity to grow protein crystals. Many of these explore the effects of microgravity on humans, animals, plants, and materials. ISS crews gather data and carry out experiments. When working outside the craft, they wear space suits that have nine layers of protection. Instead of shoes, they often wear slipper socks. However, their clothes include velcro strips on which they can attach trays or pockets. While on the ISS, crew members do not need to wear space suits. There is very little gravity, so astronauts need to tie themselves to something so they do not float through the air as they sleep. Because the Sun rises every 45 minutes, people onboard usually wear sleeping masks. It includes two bathrooms, a gym, and six sleeping quarters. The living and working space inside the ISS is larger than a six-bedroom house. A return vehicle is available if an emergency requires the ISS crew to leave immediately. Water is recycled from the water vapor that crew members breathe out. The air is carefully filtered to clean it. However, they must bring or produce all of the air, water, and food that they need to survive. Japanese astronaut and Expedition 38 Flight Engineer Koichi Wakata narrates a video tour of the crew quarters inside the International Space Stations Harmony node. They have electrical power provided by huge solar panels. See what an astronauts bedroom is like aboard the International Space Station in this video from NASA. It is 356 feet (109 meters) across, which is almost the full length of an American football field.Ĭrews of seven people typically stay on the ISS for about six months. The ISS was fully operational in May 2009. Many of these components were delivered to the ISS by the space shuttle, a reusable spacecraft developed by the United States. Over the following years many other components were added to Zarya. The first part of the ISS was named Zarya, which means “sunrise” in the Russian language. Known as the International Space Station (ISS), it was designed, built, and operated by a group of 15 countries-the United States, Russia, Japan, Canada, and 11 European nations. It has science labs from the United States, Russia, Japan and Europe. It is big enough to cover a football field including the end zones. It has two bathrooms, a gymnasium and a big bay window. ![]() On November 20, 1998, the first part of a new space station was launched. The space station is as big inside as a house with five bedrooms.
